Freight Forwarders Urge Ministry of Works, NPA to Commission Mile 2
By DAPO OLAWUNI
Freight forwarders under the aegis of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has called on the Federal Ministry of Works and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to open up the already rehabilitated access road leading from Mile 2 to Tin Can Island Port.
In a chat with DAILY TREND, Mr Stanley Chidozie Ejiogu,Head of Kperation (HOP) NAGAFF Compliance, lamented that freight forwarders were suffering on daily basis on the access road due to Federal governments none utilisation, despite its several months of completion.
According to the NAGAFF, the inbound lane of the access road to Tin Can Port has been occupied by oil tankers and trucks.
Ejiogu lamented that due to the non-commissioning of the already completed access road, it has now been littered with dustbins and has been converted to a refused bin .
“Most of the trucks are stationary for days on that road and this makes it impossible for bikes, motorists and even pedestrians who would want to walk down to their place of work because of the gridlock on that way.
“Containers that has been cleared and has been delivered do not have access to the port to drop the containers because of these oil tankers
“This makes the shipping companies to deduct or entirely consume our container deposits which is the only thing agents fall back to after all the rigorous and frustrating clearing process that freight forwarders go through.
“Most of the people that work within the port environment cannot drive to work because of these anomalies on the access road .
“People risk their lives on okada on the road on daily basis
“We can recall what the situation was along the port access road when containers fall on daily basis on this road , killing people, damage goods of importers, costing millions of Naira and everybody and practitioners in the maritime environment were clamouring for the government to fix this road.
“Kudos to former President Mohammadu Buhari for fixing this road , if there is anything to give the government complement for, at least that one stands out . Now that the road has been fixed why can’t the citizens of Nigeria enjoy these roads?
“Nigerians are becoming inpatient, we may revolt any moment, our leader should as a matter of urgency respond to all our yearnings now . It is better to search for a black goat in the day light before it gets dark” Ejiogu stated
